Marie Lacourcière

Pianist, composer and instrumental music performer

A woman and her piano

Marie Lacourcière returns in autumn 2024 with a new solo piano album Parfums d’Étoiles. At the frontiers of neo-classical and jazz, this original music traces the journey of an artist in search of what inspires the heart and soul of creativity, and bears witness to a life experience in all its humanity.

After studying at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal with, among others, Yuli Turovsky of I Musici, in Banff, New York and Amsterdam, Marie Lacourcière pursued a career as a classical pianist for many years. The desire to discover other modes of expression outside the world of classical music inspired the pianist to explore different art forms such as contemporary dance and the visual arts. All this research has contributed to nourishing and transforming the musical universe of Marie Lacourcière and her compositions.

Marie Lacourcière then produced and presented the show Le Piano Ivre ou Claude Léveillée entendu par …  in which the audience was invited to witness the encounter between two generations of musicians through original music by Marie Lacourcière. The show, as well as the launch of the album Le Piano Ivre, took place at Salle Claude Léveillée of the Place des Arts, and at the Palais Montcalm in Quebec City and elsewhere. The second part of this production was devoted to the work of composer Michael Nyman, with music from the film The Piano rearranged and performed by the pianist.

Résonances

There is a silence where everything becomes music

In addition to teaching piano at Cégep Édouard-Montpetit for twenty-eight years, Marie Lacourcière has set poetry by Marie Uguay and Claire Dé to music in productions presented across Quebec, at the Festival de Trois and at Théâtre Essaïon in Paris. Other Music-performance shows include Pulsions, De corps et d'âme, La femme témoin and Le territoire invisible, presented at Théâtre de la Ville in Longueuil, Espace Tangente and Studio 303 in Montreal.

Over time, for Marie Lacourcière, music has become a texture, an image, a color. So it was only natural for this pianist to transpose her musical experience into painting and develop a visual relationship with sound. Exhibitions include Résonances, presented at Galerie 303 and CENTRE D’ARTS ORFORD to complement the Guido Molinari Retrospective, and Sous la peau, dans la peau at Galerie 303 of the BELGO building in Montreal.
